Even When I Forgot To Ask...

When I arrived at work early this morning, it was still dark out. I got out of my truck, and a disheveled man approached me. He was clearly high on something, and he asked me if I had any drugs. I told him this was the ambulance station, and he said, "Oh, yeah, I know."

I felt a little afraid to be alone in the parking lot with him, but I had my door key in my hand, and it wasn't that far to the the door. He took a step toward me and said he needed some tender loving care. That made me a little scared, because the only time I encounter people like this is on a call with lots of backup where my role is to render medical aid. This was different; I was out of my comfort zone and no one was around to help me. I even forgot to pray to my guardian angel.

Then I said the same thing to him that I say to telemarketers that mistakenly call the ambulance station. I asked him if he was in need of medical aid, and if he was, I would go inside and activate 911 and come out with my partner. I must have taken him by surprise, because he let me past.

A close call? Maybe. I'm just surprised at myself for forgetting to ask my guardian angel to come to my aid.

I think your guardian angel was one step ahead today! Glad you are OK!

Thanks, Angela. I just saw this guy again. I was sitting in the ambulance in a back alley, while my partner went into a store. The guy came up to my window, and started talking to me. I unrolled it a few inches. He asked me what time I got off work, and again mentioned needing TLC. He is a known alcoholic and drug addict. This is the fourth time I've had to deal with him. Once he was hanging off the driver's side of the vehicle as I was driving away. That was really scary! Another time, he came into my work place in the middle of the night, but I called 911. That was also really scary. He's a poor, lost soul, I guess, and maybe God is telling me to pray for him. Yeah, I think I'll do that.

I don't like the sounds of this. I think you should report every incident to the police. Perhaps that sounds like an over-reaction - but he could present a danger to you. Trust your instincts - if you are uncomfortable, there is probably good reason to be.

Today you maybe should have immediately walked past him and hurried indoors.

Your angel did guard you today.

Just be careful.

Thanks Terry. I think my angel was looking out for me, even though I totally forgot to ask for his help. Amazing how they protect us even when we neglect them!

Take a tip from from Sir Jacob Astley, Royalist commander in the English Civil War, who composed the following battle prayer (in The Longest Day, Cornelius Ryan reports that one of the Allied commanders -- I can't recall which one -- uttered it on the eve of D-Day):

Oh Lord! Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget Thee, do not Thou forget me!

That's a great prayer Anita. Thanks!

An email comment from Shirley, whose computer won't let her post comments on my blog, so I'm printing it for her:

The next time this man approaches you, and says he is in need of TLC, tell him that he sure is, because TLC stands for The Love of Christ, and it's a good opportunity to evangelize by telling him that he can receive mercy and forgiveness as well as love from Our Lord. Maybe this is how the Holy Spirit will plant a seed in him to help him turn his life around. If not, at the very least, it should cause him to leave you alone, as we all know how people avoid those who talk about religion!
