Mass in Boston

I'm looking for input from a traditional perspective on where to go to Mass in Boston. We will be there just for one night on a Saturday, and won't be able to attend Sunday Mass due to flight times. (Unless it's a really early Mass). So if anyone knows a good Mass that isn't happy clappy, I'd like to hear from you.

Where are you staying in Boston, downtown, Back Bay or some town close to Boston?

I was going to recommend this place

http://www.stclementshrine.org/

but they don't have a Saturday vigil Mass.

Lynne, I haven't booked a hotel yet. I'm waiting to see where to go to Mass first. I think we'll have to do the Saturday Vigil Mass unless there is a really early TLM to go to. I'll check your link. Thanks.

Unfortunately, the only church that is allowed to offer the TLM in the Archdiocese of Boston (thanks Cardinal Sean!) only offers it on Sunday at noon. However, the church does have a NO Mass at 4:00 pm on Saturday. It's in Newton, which isn't a bad location...

Here's their website

Is Boston the only stop? Gosh your so close it is a shame you can't stop in NJ :)

Karin, you can meet me in Nantuckett! August 27 - Sept 2.

Lynne, I think we'll be staying fairly close to downtown or maybe Back Bay as it would be nice to be in walking distance of everything. And since we are only there on an overnight stop, I want to be able to plan the Church ahead of time for Mass.

It's surprising, the number of churches within Boston that don't offer a Saturday vigil mass...

The St Francis Chapel which is in the Prudential Center (an upscale mall) in the Back Bay is run by the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. They have 2(!) vigil Masses, one at 4 and one at 5:30.

I can't vouch for their masses, but back in 2005 when we were gathering signatures to get a marriage amendment on the ballot, they let us collect signatures there. They also have a very nice bookstore.

Well, if you are only going to be here on Saturday night, Mass is out of the question. The only TLM is Sunday at noon. If you are in the downtown/Bay Bay area on Saturday, St. Clement's Eucharistic Shrine on Boylston Street, just a block south of Massachusetts Avenue, is open all afternoon for adoration. An excellent setting, though they only bring out the "good" monstrance on Sunday, the weekday/Saturday one being rather pedestrian.

I'm disgusted. You need to be focusing on the Red Sox...not fretting about Mass in Mass.

Some folks just have their priorities all wrong.

Go Sox.

Any idea where you are going to eat? I'm sure I'm not alone in having a few recomendations.

I think she was more concerned about feeding her soul... ;-)

However, in the Prudential Center (where the Chapel is) is a fine restaurant called Legal Seafood.

The Back Bay is a really nice area of Boston.

Thanks Lynne. I was actually looking at Back Bay and Legal Seafood!! Small world, isn't it? I think I'm going to plan on going to Mass at the chapel you mentioned. I have the transportation to Nantucket coordinated now, so all I have to do is book the hotel. There are some pretty nice ones, pricey, too. Good thing Canadian money is almost at par now!

Lynne, I booked at the Jury's Hotel (the renovated police station) for the one night stay on the trip over to Nantucket, and the Hilton for the trip back. The Hilton is only a block from the Prudential Centre where the Mass is held. Thanks for all your suggestions! It was a big help.

Karin, your hubby's a chef? Never mind Boston, we're going to your place for dinner! ;] We are going to Legal's on Saturday, Sept 1, right after the Vigil Mass. Lynne said the Vigil Mass is in the Prudential Building, the same place as Legal's. That would be so nice of you to arrange that. You sure you can't make it to Nantucket at all? Or maybe Boston?
