"One should NEVER attack a priest, even when he's in error, rather one should pray and do penance that I'll grant him My grace again. He alone fully represents Me, even when he doesn't live after My example!" (page 29, Mutter Vogel's Worldwide Love, St. Grignion Publishing House, Altoting, South Germany (29. 6. 1929)).
When a Priest falls we should extend him a helping hand THROUGH PRAYER AND NOT THROUGH ATTACKS! "I myself will be his judge, NO ONE BUT I!" "Whoever voices judgment over a priest has voiced it over Me; child, never let a Priest be attacked, take up his defense." (Feast of Christ the King 1937) "Child, Never judge your confessor, rather pray much for him and offer every Thursday, through the hands of My blessed Mother, Holy Communion (for Him) (18.6. 1939)&nsp; "Never again accept an out-of-the-way word about a Priest, and speak no unkind word (about them) EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE! "Oh pray much for My priests, that they'll love purity above all, that they'll celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with pure hands and heart. Certainly the Holy Sacrifice is one and the same even when it is celebrated by an unworthy priest, but the graces called down upon the people is not the same!" (28. 2. 1938)

I think I need to offer more prayers than usual for our Priests!!!
If nothing changes, nothing changes. Correcting error and standing up for truth is not "attacking" a priest. Given the choice, I'll say something to the priest and, if necessary, the bishop. Every time.
Priests need prayer, indeed, but so many are unfortunately ignorant of the rubrics, the GIRM, and the Church's other teachings.
Is the writer saying that God never speaks through other people?
You bring up some good points, Cygnus. When I posted this, I was thinking about those same things, and wondered how this applied to priests who are clearly not following their Catholic teaching. Cardinal Mahoney comes to mind.
I think this warning must be for people who tend to criticize priests (as a form of detraction) rather than praying for them. But then again, so much (grace)can be accomplished with prayer and fasting that maybe it is meant to taken literally for those situations where priests are barely Catholic.
I read on EWTN fora that criticizing a priest would mean saying he is boring, or smells bad, etc.
BUT if the priest is steering people wrong he must be corrected. Of course, correction may turn into criticizing but when you see the damage that has been done in Milwaukee with people thinking they are Catholic but believing in a completely different religion thanks to their priests ---or having been led into sin from the priest misrepresenting Church teaching, that must be corrected. Sorry for the long run on sentence but I am tired!

Prayer is great but it wont change the person. Has Cdl. Mahoney changed his ways?
If not for the errant priest or bishop, pray for their subjects!
There was a saying by a saint (cannot remember which one sorry) that holy prayers from the people make priests holy.
Diana, I think you and Cygnus are right - that error needs to be corrected (after all many souls are at stake) and that criticism is not the same as bringing to light the errant teachings of a wayward priest.
I will say this: It is certainly possible to take items of pure taste to extremes. If I'm sitting there taking inventory of the priest, the liturgy, the Haugen-Haas music, etc., then I'm missing the point of being at the Mass, am I not? That's different from out-and-out error.
My DW and I confronted a priest who was visiting a parish from New Zealand, and forsook the homily for a native Maori dance instead because he was leaving that week. We'd do so again.
