Do you pray the Luminous Mysteries?

Why or why not? One of the best trad bloggers, Athanasius Contra Mundum, has a good post on why not. He even affectionately calls them the "Glow in the Dark" Mysteries. I tend to think they are a really good meditation on the life of Christ, but I'm not in the habit of praying them. I used to, but I guess being the trad I am, I fell back into the old, traditional way of saying the Rosary. What about you?

I dont.
Simply because I was never taught to say the Rosary with those mysteries.

We always do. We made a special effort when they were first introduced to learn them and now we always pray the Luminous. It is a wonderful addition. It sort of completes the circle of mysteries. I always have trouble remembering the exact name of the last one, but otherwise they are very good for teaching children about Christ's life etc.

No, I do not pray the Illuminati Mysteries. However, they are prayed at a certain seminary that shall remain nameless. It's like the fingernails of Modernism on the blackboard of Tradition.

Hmmmmm....I rather like that analogy. I believe I shall copyright it and use it again.

Yeah, I pray them with the Queen of the House.

But I really have a hard time entering into them as mysteries, I mostly just sort of try to remember them as I say the aves .

I have mixed feelings abut them.

But, I don't feel I have much of a right to criticize them because I don't pray the rosary much at all anymore.

I did get in the habit for awhile of offering a decade a day (The Institution of the Eucharist) for the "Universal Indult" and for the Reform of the Reform. I'd like to get back in the habit of offering at least a decade for the Restoration and Reform of the Liturgy.

they are great for meditation on their own, but they are an unnecessary addition to Our Lady's Psalter.

Just more novelty and invention (the addition of the mysteries to the rosary, not the mysteries themselves.)

one psalter, if i am not wrong, consists of 150 prayers?...thus the addition of another 5 decades or 50 prayers (in the sense of the 50 Hail Marys) disrupts what the rosary originally should consist of, and is highly unnecesary in my opinion.

I typically follow the schedule offered by the Church, with the Luminous mysteries on Thursday. I also sometimes say them on Saturday as well.

I've had difficulty meditating on them, but not much more than with the Joyful or the Glorious. One thing that helps is to think of it as a really long meditation on the Eucharist.

As an aside, although I could understand people being uncomfortable with the change, I never thought someone might be opposed to it. While I understand the desire to keep it linked with the psalms, no one says the rosary as a substitute for them anymore. In fact when most people say the rosary they only say one set of mysteries, or 50 Hail Mary's. And when they want to pray the psalms they pick up the nearest Bible and start praying.

And to say these new mysteries are an effect of modernism is just bizarre. First, most, what you call NeoCatholics, don't actually pray the Rosary. Second, if they did, mysteries to cater to them would be along the lines of the "Naturalistic "mysteries (Christ as our Mother Earth) or the "Expressive" mysteries (Expressing Christ through Liturgical Dance). Mysteries focusing on the Eucharist would not be in that set.

dr. bombay, you crack me up.....you post to other blogs don't you?
or do you have your own blog?

Nah, this is the only blog that would have me. I just leave snooty comments from time to time in the comm boxes of other blogs. And I post at the Fisheaters forum too. They're a good group of traddys and the really uptight ones are fun to taunt.

I'm with Karyn on this one. THat's exactly how I feel as well.

I don't. I figure if Our Lady wanted her rosasry changed in such a dramatic way she would've said so. At any rate, it's not important. God bless those who say the Lum mysteries, a lot of Catholics don't say the rosary at all in any form but the Lum are not for me.

indeed dymphna, and they are not for me either.

Hah! Such modesty! Why don't you treat all of us to another one of your posts? And thanks for keeping up the blog while I was on hiatus. (I'm still on partial hiatus, btw).

Nope. The rosary didn't need to get jazzed up.

Christine, Thank goodness I am not the only sane one on this blog.
I find it sad that you all have to find fault with something so beautiful so that you feel good about being separated with the Church.
What is wring with praying while meditating about Jesus Baptism, Jesus miracle at the wedding at Canan, Jesus preaching and teaching, Jesus Transfiguration, The sacrament of the Eucharist? What is wrong with praying and thinking about these? Why would Our Lady, or Our Lord object? What about these is so revolting to you that you cannot pray them?
I mean what can be so beautiful as meditating on Christ's life and the miracles that he performed and the proofs that he is GOD? What is wrong with that?
I truely do not understand your point of view.

Mary Margarite, there is nothing wrong with praying and meditating on the Luminous Mysteries. No one said there is, and they do make for a good, prayerful meditation. Some people prefer to pray the rosary without these mysteries is all, and the Church has not commanded that we add them in. I'm not sure how you came up with the word "revolting" to describe how any one who commented here feels about them. Some people prefer the traditional rosary, is all.

Our family does pray the Mysteries of Light. While I understand the feeling that some have that the additional prayers upsets the balance of the Psalter and the Rosary, I don't feel that is so important. Let us all remember the difference between traditions and Tradition. While the Rosary is an approved prayer, it is not necessary to our salvation. (Helpful, yes...extremely helpful)

The point that adding 5 more (optional) mysteries is in anyway modernist or anti-traditional is ludicrous. There are so many more important things, substantive things, to be concerned about that nitpicking on these is really beneath us as practical Catholics.
