Is it something in our water...

Or is this story for real? Canadian women are being asked to mail their underpants - yes, you read it right- to Myanmar to aid the international effort to shame Myanmar's ruling junta into giving citizens greater access to humanitarian aid and human rights. It seems the men of Myanmar believe that contact with women's undergarments drains them of their power, and this is an attempt to play on that superstition. I can't help wondering...whatever happened to plain old Kryptonite?

Pssst...call it Burma, not Myanmar. The junta renamed it that after the 1988 massacres.

From the CIA World Factbook:

[S]ince 1989 the military authorities in Burma have promoted the name Myanmar as a conventional name for their state; this decision was not approved by any sitting legislature in Burma, and the US Government did not adopt the name, which is a derivative of the Burmese short-form name Myanma Naingngandaw

I'll always call it Burma, for the sake of those whom the junta is repressing.

Ummm--this sounds less like a legit protest than someone with a disordered affection or sense of humor getting a giggle.

like i said in my post about the cyclone, the government of myanmar doesn't give a rats so and so about their own citizens. they are tyrannical, and don't give a hoot about what happens to their own people.
they are despicable. mailing underpants is disgusting and ought to be heavily discouraged. its also revolting to think that this kind of action is being taken at all.

Yes, IR, they probably are getting a giggle out of it. I do hope they wash them first, though!
