Do you abstain from meat or substitute a penance on Fridays? The Church's current regulations call for Catholics (in the US and Canada) to either abstain from meat on Fridays or to substitute an act of penance or charitable work if you eat meat on this day traditionally devoted to penance. EWTN has a good explanation of the current requirements, which most of us are probably already familiar with. I personally prefer to abstain from meat on Fridays, in keeping with the ancient tradition of penance.

Also, as someone pointed out once, it's the easiest to remember. At least it is for our family. :-)
i wont eat meat on any friday at all. i prefer to keep tradition. same as frank, no meat on any friday.
We do not eat meat on Fridays but then I don't eat red meat at all anymore or extremely rarely so I'm not sure my non meat eating Fridays count for much though they fulfill the letter of the rule.
Owen that's a good question, one you might want to address to your priest. If someone does not eat red meat for health or diet reasons, they certainly are fulfilling the letter of the law. But to fulfill the spirit of the law may require a Friday penance; I would ask your priest to be sure. I can just imagine how much grace God would pour out upon you if you were to take on a voluntary penance like that.
Excepting solemnities: does that mean that no penance is required on solemnities?
Shirley, yes - a Solemnity would be the same as a Sunday, a day of great joy, so there would be no penance. Remember the Lord said not to fast while you are with the bridegroom?
And Jesus saith to them: Can the children of the marriage fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
My penance involves passing the Rog Mahal on Fridays...visual nightmare for me here in LA...I don't eat meat on Fridays when I'm out with my Catholic Friends, (which is most Fridays, solid group at my parish we have). Or I'll offer a Holy Hour in reparation of wreckovations :)
I abstain from meat on Fridays -- but that's part of the Dominican discipline, so that simplifies things.
(I have to admit, though, that fish is really not penitential...)
