Decisions, decisions

I have 20 days vacation coming up in February, and our vacation plans have been derailed. We had planned for the whole family to get together in Hawaii, (side by side condos would have been nice, just picture the leisure nights on the deck overlooking the ocean, tropical drinks in hand), but the economy interfered, and not everyone could afford to go. There goes my opportunity to say, "Here today, gone to Maui!") So the remaining family members who still planned on a joint vacation settled on Cancun as a less expensive but still affordable alternative. The economy interfered again, though, with more family members experiencing lay-offs. So now I still have all this vacation time already booked, and nowhere to go. There are plenty of last minute deals that are quite affordable - have passport, will travel -so now I am spending quite a bit of time surfing the web looking for all inclusive vacations to Cuba, Los Cabos, etc. The longer I wait, the more affordable it gets. Vegas is also an option. Anywhere sunny and warm will do.

Marilena, the day planner is a 16 month calendar/planner that I ordered from tan Publishers. It has all the feast days, both traditional and new. I ordered two, and gave one away in a contest that was open to all readers, including family. If you want one, you will hav to wait until the 2010 ones come out next summer. No doubt I will be giving one away then.

Lake Tahoe is gorgeous any time of year! And Reno is cheaper than Vegas ;-)

How 'bout Texas? We always wanted to go there, remember? And you could drive to Mexico from there or take a cruise boat from there out on the Gulf of Mexico to Cancun.

Cygnus, isn't Lake tahoe a skier's haven this time of year? Coming from snow country, you would think I ski, but I don't. I used to snowmobile, but avalanches are way too frightening to make it worth the risk.

Therese, Australia sounds wonderful! The others only have 1 week off, though so that will have to wait.

Shirley, yes, I do remember our plans to drive to Texas. It's probably a good thing we never went. Although it sounded fun at the time. Young and foolish!

I feel bad that not everyone can go on this vacation as planned, so now I'm tossing up whether to go somewhere - anywhere - or to use the money I've saved up and put new floors in my house. New floors - vacation to somewhere warm and sunny - hmmm. I'm undecided. Really.

Cuba?? PG, I'd rather spend a weekend in Gaza.

The room rates in Vegas have dipped significantly this year, but they do fluctuate sporadically. I can ask around if you like. Just let me know what dates you’re interested in and I’ll check with a few of my connections and maybe even get you a lower rate. Again, even after the rate decrease, the rooms might still be up there. Let me know.

I forget the name, but there is a part of Canada that (I believe) borders Washington state. I can’t recall the name, but it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Tom, Cuba is not dangerous to tourists! I know several people who vacation there - at Cuba's all-inclusive resorts - and they all come back alive! And they get to take a plane back - they don't have to swim across the ocean to the US!

Hey, you must be referring to Beautiful British Columbia, my home province. We border Washington State; actually where I live, at the coast, we are very close to Seattle.

I'll let you know if we come to Vegas. You'd be the first real-life blogger I would get to meet. Outside of my two sisters, that is.

I would encourage you to wait to visit Cuba until the people that live there can enjoy the freedoms that come with a free country. Currently, they are slaves to the Castro regime. I don't see how anyone can go there and spend dollars with a clear conscience. Might I recommend Merida, Mexico? Beautiful town with a beautiful cathedral, and interesting Mayan ruins nearby. And very inexpensive. Puerto Vallarta is also very nice.

Anon, Canada has a very good relationship with Cuba. We trade with them, and they love Canadian tourists. I was told by the travel agent that Cubans will not accept American money or American credit cards, as they do not have a trade relationship with the US. I haven't yet decided where we are going, but if we do go to Cuba, the money we spend there will benefit the local economy. Plus I will bring $ to give away to the poor.
