Rosary Novena to Stop Abortions

I get a lot of emails forwarded to me, but very few of this nature. This one, copied below in its entirety, was sent to me by a pro-life friend. It asks for a Rosary Novena to stop the Freedom of Choice Act which will soon be passed in the US unless God intervenes. Please read it and get out your rosaries for this intention. The novena starts Sunday. Remember Barack Obama said his first presidential act will be to sign the FOCA. He can only be stopped by prayer.

From Lord David Alton on USA Freedom of Choice Act

Dear Friends, If you are apposed to abortion then there is bad news on the horizon. For those of you who do not know, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is set to be signed if the US Congress passes it on January 21-22 of 2009. The FOCA is the next sick chapter in the book of abortion.

If made a law then all limitations on abortion will be lifted which will result in the following:

1) All hospitals, including Catholic hospitals will be required to perform abortions upon request. If this happens Bishops vow to close down all Catholic hospitals, more then 30% of all hospitals in the United States .

2) Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.

3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.

4) Parental notification will no longer be required.

5) The number of abortions will increase by a minimum of 100,000 annually.

Perhaps most importantly the government will now have control in the issue of abortion. This could result in a future amendment that would force women by law to have abortions in certain situations (rape, down syndrome babies, etc) and could even regulate how many children women are allowed to have. Needless to say this information is disturbing, but sadly true.

As Catholics, as Christians, as anyone who is against the needless killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this horrific act before it becomes a law.

The Plan: To say a novena (9 days of prayer) along with fasting starting on January 11th. For Catholics, the prayer of choice will be the rosary with intentions to stop the FOCA. For non Catholics I encourage you to pray your strongest prayers with the same intentions, also for nine consecutive days. The hope is that this will branch and blossom as to become a global effort with maximum impact. We have very little time so we all must act fast. Just do three things:

1) Pass this letter to 5 or more people

2) Do it in three days or less

3) Start the novena on January 11th and pray for nine consecutive days.(please also fast for at least two days during the novena)

Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of prayer is undeniable. If you are against the senseless killing of defenseless children then the time is now to do something about it! May God bless you all!! David Alton(Professor Lord Alton of Liverpool )

I posted a link on my blog and will join the novena, and I am printing off the letter and taking it to Mass this evening to see if anyone will join in.

Thanks Shirley and Marilena. Did you catch the news that we are going to be disgraced with Obama's first international visit? I wonder if that will before or after he signs the FOCA that allows a no-holds barred killing of babies.

1) "Apposed" is not a word.
2) There is no way FOCA will be passed this January. It is still in the respective Judiciary Committees of both the House and the Senate and has been since April 2007. It must still be approved by these committees, passed by both houses of congress (almost certainly amended), and then back to a conference committee to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions, and then passed by both houses again before it will reach President Obama's desk. This process will take months or years; the chances that it will be accomplished in the first 2 days of the next congressional session are absurdly small.
3) It is rather unlikely that the bill, as written, will be passed by Congress at all. The current legislature's makeup is not radically different from the one that passed the Partial Birth Abortion Ban. If FOCA is passed, it will be heavily amended as the current language is too ambiguous to be enforced by the courts.
4) Catholic hospitals will not be required to perform abortions for several reasons. First, the bill only regulates government agencies. Catholic hospitals are not government agencies. Secondly, such a requirement violates the 1st Amendment. Finally, federal conscience clause law (see US Code: Title 42, 300a–7) would continue to protect the rights of Catholic hospitals not to perform abortions.
5) All US taxpayers already fund abortions. Medicare and Medicaid funds go to abortion clinics currently.
6) Abortions would not increase by 100,000 annually. This is patently false. Studies have repeatedly shown that abortion rates do not increase or decrease a significant amount in relation to its legality. The only statistic that does change is the sudden spike in maternal deaths from illegal abortions when they are prohibited.
7) The bill's language does very little to alter US partial-birth abortion regulation. It only protects the rights of women up until the point of viability. Almost all partial birth abortions are performed after this point and nearly exclusively when the health of the mother is in serious danger.
8) Finally, the coup de grace and my favorite claim in the above note: the government will have control over abortion and force it upon unwilling citizens. The government already controls abortion. That is why it was able to both legalize it nationally in Roe v. Wade and, alternatively, ban certain practices such as partial-birth abortion. The idea that a government that is--lest we forget--controlled by its citizens would implement a policy of widespread forced abortions, flying in the face of nearly every constitutional protection we have, within a culture that obsessively upholds individual rights, is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.

Good night and good luck.

although the previous comment has certain good information, some of it is opinionated, and shakey to me, especially the 2nd half of it. I appreciate the argument, but it must be taken as such. Its clearly someone who is pro-choice, and is more than anything trying to dissuade our courage and calm our burning intentions to fight on with our hearts and minds.

I will certainly be praying the Rosary this month, especially Jan.22, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. I agree that the process of approving the FOCA is more complex than some might think, but I also think that this kind of legislation is a disgrace to our country, and the new administration is unlikely to give us any recourse. That's why we must all pray to Our Lady for help. Help from Heaven can stop this!
