Silence please

One thing I love about the Latin Mass is the prayerful atmosphere of silence that prevails in the church. Nobody engages in useless conversation that serves to distract others from their prayer and preparation for Mass. There are not cell phones ringing off the hook, either. That's why I was surprised to see this notice in our bulletin:

Please refrain from talking in the Church, as it is a distraction to others who are praying. Conversations should take place outside or in the hall.

Notice the above does not say it is acceptable to talk in the foyer. It clearly says, "outside or in the hall." If only this announcement could make its way into every bulletin in the world!

as you know, there is zero talking at our chapel:) not even in the hallway:) no one would ever talk in the hallway, let alone whisper. its unheard of in our church. respect is an absolute must. iam greatful we have it and that people are respectful of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

When I went to Holy Family in August there was a lady who whispered to me in the church before Mass (during the Rosary) because she was trying to help me with the missal. Also a little boy in the back row was making noise (as kids do) and his (bare-headed, pants wearing grandma) had to shush him until he was taken out. I was surprised that half the women in that church were wearing pants and not wearing veils. I go to a NO Mass at home and silence before and after Mass is not an issue here.

Angela, nobody is pefect after all. That's what confession is for! LOL! I have seen a few women wear pants to my church, but very few. Maybe summer is different with all the tourists. At any rate, I'm glad you came to our church, and even happier you have a silent atmoshphere in your church where prayer is possible. God bless! Send me an email if you ever come again. It would be nice to meet up with a fellow BC blogger!

Whereas in contrast, in the St. John Chrysostom Liturgy silence is rare. There's almost always chanting or singing. It's just the culture it came from. And yes I realize I just finished a sentence with a preposition.

i see we are discussing pants for women. i sometimes talk at mass to point out something important to the wife who's mind tends to wander or is easily distracted by children at mass. i know i should wait till after mass but often something else comes along.

Unfortunately, at my parish many are not silent during Mass - not even during the consecration-.
Depending on environment, there can be mitigations, teaching toddlers (they don't get try to say these prayers out loud at this point and keep your mouth shut at this other point), also, at our parish is a woman who is blind; she needs verbal cues when something different happens during the mass- (baptism for example).

I would aprreciate more silence at mass, but there is also a need to be charitable. And yes everyone here is being polite, just trying to present the other side too.

Due to rather nasty weather, the House Sergeant Major went to local Novus Ordo.

When I got home, I asked her how it was.

Her response --- "Those people don't even KNOW they were in church!"
