Mass Confusion

Some people sure get riled over the possibility of the Tridentine Latin Mass coming to their Novus Ordo community. They feel threatened, and say it has to do with division. Yesterday, at Catholic Answers forums we had a heated debate over this very topic. Today, the thread has disappeared, removed by the moderators.

It seems the Novus Ordo champions want all the people of the parish at their Mass, so as not to create camps within the parish. They say the TLM promotes elitism and snobbery, with a holier than thou attitude. The traditional Catholics just want to be able to worship God in a more reverent, holy and sacred manner. Who's right? Well, the Novus Ordo is here to stay, so just like the poor, we will always have it among us.

The Latin Mass, by its very nature, is a drawing card of sacred treasure that attracts people by its reverence, beauty and tradition. Once the Motu Proprio is released, the parishes that offer both Masses will undoubtedly see increased attendance at the TLM. This worries those who attend the NO, and I believe they feel threatened by it. They don't want what they call a return to the dark ages, and feel the Church is moving backwards by allowing priests to offer the TLM again.

Most, (but not all) Novus Ordo Masses feature women in the sanctuary, and permit laymen to distribute Holy Communion in the hand, while allowing and even encouraging altar girls, polka and rock music, clowns, and kissing and hugging. The sense of sacredness is gone. Our beautiful Roman liturgy has been Protestantized beyond recognition. So what is there to separate us from our Protestant brethren?

If it weren't for the Consecration, our Mass would be identical to any given protestant service. That's why we hold the Latin Mass so close to our hearts. It distinguishes us as Catholics, and keeps our sacred traditions alive. It inspires one to holiness and reverence. If only the champions of the Novus Ordo could understand this without feeling threatened.

That's one of the most flagrant examples of the pot calling the kettle black I've ever seen. After all, who is it who's in favor of giving people a free choice?

The TLM inspires one to holiness. I think that scares some people, because it's easy to be spiritually lazy. It's a lot of work to be a good Catholic. And how many good, hard-hitting homilies do we hear at a NO Mass? Very few, but God bless the priests who are not afraid to speak about the truths of the faith. Every TLM homliy I have heard has been about faith & morals.

Those that call TLM an excercise in snobbery, I must ask this question:

How many of the Accusers actually attend Mass these days, if at all?

You know, I have to stand up for the CAF people here.
I do believe that most of them are every week churchgoers and some more than that.

Some have deep devotions and some are even priests.

Many are just innocent and are learning there. They only repeat what they hear about the TLM and are not exposed to it's beauty, or even a reverent NO.

But let me tell you this, a couple are just buttheads.

Yeah, a couple are just buttheads!! Well said! Excuse me, now I have to run off to confession...

And having Masses in several different other languages doesn't create camps?

There's some pretty heated discussions going on at CAF Anita. you should check them out.

let me say this, yes im a CAF member, and a laity of the SSPX, there is NO snobbery in our society.

The snobbery is in the minds of the more modernist Novus Ordo churchgoers. They mistake holiness for snobbery, it seems. Must have to do with the way they look down their nose at Traditional Catholics? Ok, now I really need to go to confession!!!

OK I have to chime in here...
I am tired of certain posters on the CAF forums stating that the "trads need to stop their complaining and whinning"!

There is nothing wrong with the "Trads" and to imply (sweetly) otherwise is an insult!

I have searched for years to find a mass that left me whole (body and spirit) and when I finally found one...I cried..I cried for joy...joy that I could be "whole", that I would not have to leave or at the time not join the Church and take my kiddies with me...some of us without knowing anything different still know that something is not right at certain parishes...it tears at our souls each day until we either leave or find the things at another parish!

Karin, did you find a good NO parish, or do you attend the TLM? A reverent NO is good to find, but sadly, there aren't enough of them, just as the TLM is not abundantly available to those who seek it.

I did finalyl (thanks to GOd) find a reverent NO...(bells, no female alter servers, no EHMC etc.)
A TLM I would love to find...but the closest is the City (NYC) and that is just to spendy for me right now (tolls & parking)

There is a retired priest here who does a very reverent NO Mass every weekday morning at 07:00. He's in very poor health, but he gets up and comes to church early every morning, even in the freezing weather, to celebrate Mass for those of us who can't make the later daily Masses (most of them in town aren't until 08:30). The man has been a priest for more than 50 years, so he must be in his 80s, and he's on oxygen; but it's like the Mass is a fountain of youth for him, especially when he preaches. His Masses are so reverent, and his preaching so solid, that Sunday Mass at my own cathedral parish seems in some ways like a letdown.

Oh, and despite the early hour, his Masses are almost always PACKED. As much as I hate getting up at 06:00 to attend Mass, I'd hate even more to miss any of his Masses -- especially since there's no knowing how much longer we'll have him. What a frightful loss his passing will be.

But he just may go straight to heaven, by the sounds of things. You are blessed to have him in your diocese.
